FOR 2005 AND NEWER TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID VEHICLES, follow the procedures listed below.

Perform the following steps from (1) through (4) in 60 seconds.

  1. Apply the parking brake. Steps 2 through 7 must be done within 45 seconds.
  2. Turn the power switch ON (this means pressing the power button twice without depressing the brake pedal). The dashboard will illuminate, including the MIL at the base of the windshield for the KOEO test.
  3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the transmission in the "P" or PARK position.
  4. Place the transmission in the "N" or NEUTRAL position by stepping on the brake and moving the selector on the dashboard to "N". Remove your foot from the brake. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the transmission in the "N" position.
  5. Put the vehicle in PARK by pressing the PARK button on the dashboard. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the transmission in the "P" or PARK position.
  6. Check that the amber HV system warning lamp flashes on the multi-information display (normal in this test mode) in the center console.
  7. Depress the brake pedal and start the engine by pushing the power ON switch. The engine will start and idle at 1,000 RPM.
  8. Depress the accelerator more than 60 percent to raise the engine speed to 2,500 RPM. Hold for the required time. See the NOTICE below.
  9. Remove your foot from the accelerator to allow the engine to idle for the required amount of time.
  10. Ensure the vehicle is in PARK (see step 5) and shut off the engine by depressing the ON switch.
  11. Proceed to the fuel cap test.

NOTICE

  1. The RPM is not controlled directly by the accelerator pedal on these vehicles.
  2. The idling speed in the inspection mode is approximately 1,000 RPM. The engine speed increases to 1,500 RPM when the accelerator pedal is depressed by less than 60 percent. The engine speed increases to 2,500 RPM when the accelerator pedal is depressed by more than 60 percent.

FOR 2004 AND OLDER TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID VEHICLES, follow the procedures listed below.

To ensure the engine starts, turn on the AC with the fan on high. Turning on the headlights to HIGH beam may also be necessary to force the engine to start.

NOTICE
On the early model Prius vehicles the engine will start if the battery has a low state of charge or the air conditioner is turned on. Turning the AC and fan on will cause the engine to start.
